‘There are going to be teams looking at Tyler’ – Millwall boss Rowett on form of Burey and Wallace

Gary Rowett reckons Tyler Burey is likely to start attracting attention if the Millwall winger keeps delivering big performances.

The 21-year-old made it two goals in as many matches as the Lions won 2-1 at Derby County on Wednesday night.

Jed Wallace, who is out of contract in the summer, scored and assisted in the victory over the Rams. He was the subject of at least two bids from Nottingham Forest in January.

And the Millwall boss admitted that players who produce standout displays are going to become wanted men.

“Whether you are playing and out of contract, playing to get a new contract or not going to get a contract – if you train well and play well then someone else will want you,” said Rowett.

“Sometimes, as players, you have to let the other stuff not affect you. Jed is a perfect example of that – if he plays well then it will be his decision what he gets and he’s going to have some good decisions.

“That’s the same for any player who is ambitious. Look at young Tyler – he has come into the team and makes a statement. There are going to be teams looking at Tyler because of his age and his profile.

“That’s what the game is about – performing and the rest is just a byproduct of doing your job for the team.

“Tyler has probably gone in on the back of a few injuries but he has taken his opportunity. He told me he would and delivered that. Two goals in two games – but that’s done now. What he has got to do is go and build on that and be even better and more impressive.

“Whether you are Jed, Tyler, Hutchy [Shaun Hutchinson] or Danny McNamara – whoever it is – if you do the job then you’re going to get the rewards. That’s how the game has always worked.”

Millwall have had extra cutting edge with a three-man frontline of Wallace, Burey and Mason Bennett – who also gave all kinds of problems to QPR last week.

Rowett said: “We had a bit of criticism at times for letting Jon Dadi [Bodvarsson] and Smudge [Matt Smith] go in the last window, but I felt the mobility of those type of players can cause different kinds of problems in different ways.
“Our front three were a real handful on Wednesday.”

Benik Afobe (hamstring) is facing a race to be fit for tomorrow’s home game against Sheffield United.
