Tim Cahill announces retirement from football
Tim Cahill has announced his retirement from football – with the Millwall legend set to go into coaching.
The 39-year-old started his career on the Lions books and also ensured it was a stop-off towards the end of it as well as he returned on a short-term deal for the final six months of the 2017-18 campaign.
Cahill left Millwall in the summer and signed for Indian Super League side Jamshedpur.
“I’m an old man now in football years,” he said.
“I’d love to keep playing… but I’m interested in TV. I’m going to start my [coaching] A licence, spend quality time with my family and chill out for a bit.
“It was amazing to play in four big continents. I had a great career and I’m really thankful.
“I’m someone that massively respects the game and I’ll take my time to learn more. Coaching is something that’s definitely going to be on the horizon.
“The most powerful thing is chasing your dreams. As a kid all I ever wanted to be was a footballer. It’s been amazing to have played the game I love professionally for 23 years.
“I want to say thank you to everyone that was a part of this journey. Time to retire and more family time.”
Cahill scored 57 goals in 240 matches for Millwall in his first stint in SE16 – leading to a switch to Premier League Everton in 2004.
He made 10 appearances last season for the Lions, all as a sub. He missed the run-in after the FA took retrospective action – finding him guilty of elbowing Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic.
