Tooting teenager wins three gold medals and breaks two world records at Down Syndrome World Championships

A girl from Wandsworth has won three gold medals and broken two world records at the Down Syndrome World Championships in Portugal.

Amalia Freeland, 16, from Tooting took gold in the 25-metre junior butterfly, freestyle and backstroke. She then went on to take silver in two senior races – the 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley as well as breaking two junior world records in 100m and 200m individual medley.

Freeland said: “It was very exciting to go to Portugal to compete in the World Championships. It was also amazing to be part of Team GB, who are now world champions.”

Freeland is the youngest swimmer in Team GB, which is organised by Down Syndrome Swimming GB.

Head coach Edgar Andrade said: “Amalia is having an amazing evolution as a swimmer and we are extremely proud of how she has trained and performed at the World Championships.

“Alex, her father, did an amazing job coaching her at the event giving her the last minute necessary adjustments and mindset.”

Leander is one of the largest swimming clubs in South-West London with more than 300 swimmers in the academy and 170 in competitive squads and fitness swimming.
