Wandsworth borough girls football team take silver at London Youth Games
A tournament to inspire future generations of female footballers took place last weekend, with Wandsworth picking up silver medals.
Abou 200 girls took part in the London Youth Games at Gunnersbury Sports Hub on July 2, just four days before the UEFA Women’s EUROs began.
The games included 25 London boroughs aimed at young girls at an age where they traditionally might drop out of the sport.
Research from Women in Sport shows that only 14 per cent of girls aged five-16 achieve recommended levels of physical activity, dropping to 10 per cent of girls aged 13-16.
Wandsworth took the silver medal, narrowly losing 1-0 to Haringey in a tight final after beating Greenwich 2-0 in the quarter finals and Lambeth 1-0 in the semi finals.
Richard Siaw, Wandsworth’s manager said: “We were all extremely proud of the girls who represented Wandsworth fantastically throughout the day both on and off the pitch.
“They produced some brilliant performances, playing some great football. An amazing group of girls who were an absolute pleasure to coach and role models for girls in the borough.”
