Well done Jonny Williams – Lee Bowyer delighted with goal-scoring midfielder’s reaction to Shrewsbury substitution

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

What a difference a week has made for Jonny Williams. Last week the Charlton midfielder was hauled off just 23 minutes after being introduced as a substitute during the 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury – and criticised by boss Lee Bowyer for pulling out of a challenge.

Now, just seven days on the Welsh international bagged his first Valley goal as he came off the bench to impress during the 5-2 win over AFC Wimbledon.

Bowyer was delighted with the reaction he got from the former Ipswich loanee.

The Addicks manager said: “I think the most important thing for me, when I’m watching from the side, we all have standards. Like I’ve said before, maybe I try to ask too much of them at times but that’s my job. I just said after the game there to Jonny in the dressing room and to all the lads, ‘my job is to push these players and improve them and make them better.’ That’s why I reacted the way I did last weekend.

Marcus Maddison also drew praise from boss Lee Bowyer. Kyle Andrews

“Jonny, fair play to him there’s two ways you can go when that happens. You can either go backwards or you can say, ‘you know what, I’m going to step up and I’m going to do the right things and I’m going to give you the right reaction.’

“I spoke to Jonny on a couple of occasions last week and said, ‘look, I just want the right reaction.’ And that’s what he’s done. Fair play to Jonny, there’s no one that loves Jonny more than me and I’m really pleased for him. He’s given us the right reaction. Getting in the box again, he should have scored again when he hit the post. He’s getting in the box and making a difference.

“Well done Jonny Williams. And I have to say well done to Marcus Maddison as well. Have any of you guys run around as much as he did out of possession as he did today, because I haven’t. I’ve watched lots of games of Maddison and he worked really hard for the team.

“We all know the quality he has in possession and I thought that stood out again today. I thought he did really well as well. Most importantly though, the thing that pleases me was his work rate for the team.”
