Wimbledon boss explains Ryan Johnson’s absence from Bradford defeat

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson has explained that defender Ryan Johnson missed Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Bradford with a neck injury.

The 27-year-old was absent from the clash against Kevin McDonald’s side but did arrive with the team before kick-off.

Johnson joined the Dons on a free transfer from Stockport over the summer and had played every minute of all 12 League Two outings before today.

“He got a whack in training on Thursday,” said Jackson.

“It was an issue with his neck that caused him too much discomfort and pain.

“He was unable to train yesterday, and we made a late call on it this morning.

“He didn’t feel that he could get through the game – he was in too much pain.

“We had to make the change with Pearce.”

Former Millwall captain Alex Pearce partnered Joe Lewis at the back.

The 34-year-old won 10 aerial battles and made three clearances.

“We thought Pearce came in and did really well,” added Jackson.

“It was obviously disappointing as Johnson has been a bedrock there for us with his partnership with Joe.

“But we have a good squad with able deputies. Pearcy came in and did well.”
