‘Thoroughly enjoyable’ – Adam Barrett on being in caretaker charge of Millwall as boss search process continues

Adam Barrett takes charge of his fourth match as caretaker manager of Millwall this weekend and has “thoroughly enjoyed” his increased responsibilities.

The Lions assistant boss stepped up after Gary Rowett left by mutual consent last month.

Barrett is under consideration for the Millwall vacancy. Other contenders include former Luton Town and Southampton boss Nathan Jones, ex-Chelsea coach Joe Edwards, now England U20 head coach.

Barrett is busy planning for Saturday’s visit of high-flying Southampton to The Den and the former Crystal Palace centre-back admits to being in his element.

“I’m really enjoying it,” he told the South London Press. “I enjoy the challenge.

“The first week was so hectic – with everything going on – and it was just game, game, game. Three really tough games. I was delighted to get a couple of points in the away games and it could, and should, have been more at Watford.

“The home game (a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn) we were the best team. You’ve only got to look at the stats and a couple of decisions didn’t go our way. We should be sat here on more points, there is no two ways about it.

“There has been a lot of encouragement with the performances and I’ve been delighted with the lads’ reaction. They have really bought into it and they are working their socks off in training. They have really come together as a group.

“I’m not one to make excuses but the squad has been thin as well. It’s been quite difficult in that respect. It’s been good to have a full week (of training ahead of Southampton). Hopefully we get a few bodies back to make us a little bit stronger.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. This is what you’re in football for. I’ve been in the game a long time and I enjoy the challenge. We’ve got great staff here. The atmosphere has been good. What we need now is to win the game on Saturday. It will be a tough match.”
