South London lacks beauty hotspots

By Melissa Kasule

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, they say. Which means South Londoners are not looking very hard, according to new data – or are they using Boris Johnson as their lockdown hair inspiration?

Kensington & Chelsea has been titled one of the “most beautiful boroughs” in the capital, with the biggest concentrations of beauty salons in the city – it has the most nail salons, hair salons and hair removal salons.

The City comes next and Hammersmith & Fulham third.

But only Merton gets a mention of the boroughs south of the Thames.

A study by nail salon supply company, Nicely Polished revealed the beauty hotspots of London, based on the number of beauty parlours a square mile in each borough.

The west London royal borough which houses Kensington Palace, Harvey Nicholls and Harrods has 38.69 beauty venues to the mile.

Hammersmith and Fulham was found to have a total of 23.70 beauty venues per mile.

In fourth, with a total of 20.94 beauty venues per square miles was Merton.

The report also found the other royal borough, Greenwich, had only a third of its west London rival with 12.86 beauty venues per sqm.

Lambeth trailed behind with 12.64 per sqm.

Wandsworth, Bromley, Lewisham and Southwark were some of the boroughs found to have the lowest concentration of venues a square mile.

So maybe it’s just that South Londoners are naturally gorgeous – they don’t need the treatments.

Greenwich Resident, Jackie Jeffery said: “I’m a person that likes to be on top of beauty maintenance and things like that, but since moving homes there are fewer nail salons in walking proximity to me which means I am getting them done less as I cannot go after work I have to wait till the weekends.

“The length of travel also puts me off a lot, meaning I’m not getting my hair and nails done quite as often.”
