The Skinner Brothers kick off 2022 with their new album Soul Boy II

By Adam Davidson

Formed in South London, rock band The Skinner Brothers are kicking off 2022 in style with their new album and are about to embark on a huge UK headline tour.

The band, made up of vocalist Zac Skinner, Joe Fisher on guitar, Perry Meadowcroft on bass and Alfie Clayton drums, released their new album, Soul Boy II on February 18.

The record provides a snapshot of youth culture in contemporary Britain, combining fan favourites and live staples that the band have established their reputation with new material.

Lead singer Zac Skinner said: “I just kept writing and recording more and more songs.

“We felt like every song needed to fight for its position on this album. This album is like a snapshot of last year.

“The songs on this album come directly from my experiences living in London over the last 10 years. I’ve been all over town and met tonnes of different people and lived in loads of different rooms, sofas, floors etc.”

Zac grew up in a small village outside of Basingstoke but took a gamble and left for South London when he was just 18 to pursue his music career.

The singer lived across Brixton, New Cross, Peckham, Vauxhall and Stockwell until he was 25, working at The Five Bells pub in New Cross.

He said this shaped his awareness of the casual / football culture in the area which he has incorporated into his music.

He said: “Living in London made me super poor.

“I had to write songs in parks late at night because the rooms I rented always had paper thin walls and I couldn’t sing in them.

“In London you have to get by on a shoestring budget – DIY all the way.”

The gamble paid off though as in the following years he and his band would go on to tour with some of the biggest names in rock music from Kasabian to The Streets.

Zac said: “Playing on those big stages is a different ball game altogether.

“Seeing these bands behind the scenes and seeing how they operate is inspirational.

“Hopefully we can apply some of what we’ve learnt to our March tour, but I’m sure it will just be mayhem”

The Skinner Brothers are following the album’s release with a headline tour in March, the UK leg of which will conclude on March 30 at Islington’s 02 Academy.

Zac said: “We’ve never done a headline show outside of London. So we can’t even begin to imagine what the rest of the UK Skinner Brothers fans are like.

“We are buzzing to get out there.”
