Historic Maple Road Market reopens in Penge

The historic Maple Road Market reopened with a fresh new look this Saturday in Penge.

The market first opened in 1921 and was a notable social hub of commerce and community until its closure in 2010, which coincided with more supermarkets moving into the area.

Held at the Melvin Community Hall in Melvin Road, the market features more than 30 stalls including hot food, cheese, deli, cakes, art, illustration, craft, homeware, children’s activities and more.

Thanks to an injection of funding from Bromley council, the volunteer-led, independent market is back, showcasing a range of talented makers from the local area and beyond.

This includes cheesy treats from The Cheese Collective, handmade children’s wear courtesy of Penge-based business Bonny_and_Frey, and delicious baked goods from South London bakery bunheadbakes.

Perfect for picking up Christmas presents, grabbing a bite to eat, or for keeping the kids entertained, the market will be held at Melvin Hall in the winter months, filling the three halls and a large outdoor space. It will then move back outdoors to Maple Road in spring.

Market volunteer Holly Restieaux said: “Our vision with the market is to showcase the breadth of talent contained within SE20 and beyond.

“Many local residents have fond memories of visiting the original market in their youth and we are thrilled to be in a position where we can recreate that experience with this re-launch.

“Not only can visitors browse our wide range of talented makers and bakers, they can meet and chat with other members of the local community. This is just the start for Maple Road Market, we can’t wait to see how far it goes.”
