First military trio to row across Atlantic for cancer charity

By Claudia Lee

A lieutenant and two military colleagues will become the first military trio to row across the Atlantic.

Wimbledon-born Lieutenant Robert Cross has begun preparations to take on the ‘Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge’ in 2024, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and three regimental charities.

Lieutenant Cross will be joined by two other military colleagues to row the 3,000 from Spain to Antigua in the Caribbean.

The trio, renamed TEAM V3NTURE, will be the first military trio from any nation to row across the Atlantic.

An 8m boat will carry the team as they row the 3,000 miles in an estimated 35 days.

Lieutenants Cross, Newman and Treasure have set themselves the target of raising £200,000 for charity with 70 per cent of the funds to be donated to Macmillan.

The remaining 30 per cent will be donated to three regimental charities – the Rifles Regimental Trust, the Royal Artillery Association and the Welsh Guards Charity.

Macmillan’s senior relationship fundraising manager, Pauline Lewis, said: “We are so grateful that they have decided to donate the money raised to Macmillan, as whatever they raise will go a long way in providing vital support for people living with cancer.

Fundraising challenges have begun including a 24-hour static row in Waterloo station recently.

The team is seeking sponsorship to support them with purchasing a boat and entry expenses.
