‘Absolutely vital’ – Roy Hodgson on importance of Crystal Palace’s fans in their Premier League relegation battle

Returning Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson says the fans will be “absolutely vital” in the club’s battle to stay in the Premier League.

Hodgson was reappointed as boss of the Eagles following Patrick Vieira’s dismissal after the 1-0 defeat away to Brighton.

The South Londoners are the only side in the top four divisions without a win in 2023.

Palace have only won one of their last 17 in all competitions and sit three points above the relegation zone heading into this weekend’s clash with Leicester City.

“They’re absolutely vital,” said the 75-year-old told PalaceTV of the role the club’s fans can play in their remaining 10 games.

“If you listen to people from the outside and when they discuss the chances of Crystal Palace surviving, one of the first things that talk about is the fanbase.

“During my four years, it was absolutely wonderful. There is no doubt that many times they pulled us through games or gave us that energy which was missing that one time when we were flagging – they boosted the spirits.

“They have always been very supportive of the team. I don’t know how they feel at the moment – it’s impossible for me to judge from my position here.

“But, from our point of view, we’re totally and utterly dependent on them if we’re going to pull this off.

“The players are capable – there is no doubt about that. I believe that Ray and I will do the right things for them that they feel they need and get them into a position where they feel that they’re ready for the matches.

“That’s when the fans play their part. In the moments when things aren’t going quite so well, fans can help the team, but they can also make things worse for the team if they don’t show any sympathy or empathy for the players.

“That’s never been the case here – I have always felt that the fans were the most sympathetic and empathetic to the team.

“All I can hope for is that they give us that sort of backing that they gave the team during the four years I worked for the club.”
