‘Troubled waters’ – Nagelsmann’s agent explains decision to shun Chelsea

Julian Nagelsmann’s agent Volker Struth says the former Bayern Munich manager was right to turn down the vacant managerial role at Chelsea – describing the west Londoners as a club in “troubled waters”.

Former Hoffenheim boss Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern in late March and was replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

Nagelsmann, 35, held talks with Chelsea in April following Graham Potter’s sacking.

The Blues look set to appoint former Spurs and PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino as the new permeant boss at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to Bild podcast Phrasenmaher, Struth said: “I can confirm that Chelsea were quick to call – [after Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich].

“There were some phone conversations. “It was the right decision not to go there. It’s a club in troubled waters at the moment. And their transfer policy, spending a few hundred million euros, has raised expectations that need to be met.

“There were also some other issues.

“He was their number one (choice) – that was our information. I believe it would have happened if he had wanted it.”
