Firefighters tackle three-storey blaze in Croydon block of flats as 80 people escape

Firefighters tackled an enormous blaze that spread over three storeys of a block of flats in Croydon.

Eight fire engines and about 60 firefighters tackled the flat fire in Whitehorse Road yesterday afternoon.

Two flats and two balconies on the first and second floors of the building were destroyed by fire. Most of a third-floor flat and balcony were also damaged by the blaze. There were no reports of any injuries.

The London Fire Brigade’s 999 control officers took more than 40 calls about the fire.

Station Commander Chris Young, who was at the scene, said: “About 80 people left the building, thankfully uninjured.

“Road closures are expected to be in place for a number of hours this evening and we’re urging people to avoid the local area.”

The London Fire Brigade was called at 5.03pm and the fire was under control by 6.45pm. Fire crews from Croydon, Woodside, Wallington and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
