‘This football club doesn’t do major change’ – Lions boss Harris intent on keeping ‘core’ in summer transfer window

Neil Harris has talked about improving the quality of Millwall’s squad in the summer transfer window.

The Lions have won five and drawn one of their matches at The Den since Harris returned to the club as head coach in February.

Today they defeated Plymouth Argyle 2-0, their final action in SE16. They wrap up their campaign at Swansea next weekend.

Harris has steered Millwall out of drop danger and they still have a chance of finishing 13th in the standings.

Jake Cooper’s second-half header earned maximum points today.

Harris – asked if his squad needed major change in the window – said: “No, no – this football club doesn’t do major change. We are never in the financial position to do major change! We have got a good core – the core group has shown itself again.

“We need to keep the core group and add a little bit of quality, in the top half of the pitch.

“We need to make sure we get the squad balance right – in age. Have younger players who are going to come through and help us, permanently or on loan.

“And we have to make sure we keep that Millwall-ness about us – which is the Millwall spirit, playing in the right manner to what our fans want to see.

“We have got one transfer window in front of us where we have to improve the squad, have to improve the squad (emphasis it again). To improve the squad you have to change players from what is, in my opinion, the bottom reaches of the squad, and bring in players that go into your starting 11 – or very close to it.

“That is the only way any team progresses. We have to do that in the next transfer window.

“We want to finish next week with a win at Swansea because we want to past two or three teams and finish higher up the division.”
