One person hospitalised after three fires break out across South London in one night

Firefighters were called out to three fires last night after two flats and a restaurant caught alight.

At around 5pm four fire engines and 25 firefighters tackled a fire at a restaurant with flats above in South End, Croydon.

A ceiling void and lateral bathroom ducting between the first and second floors of the three-storey building was partially damaged by fire. There are no reports of any injuries, the London fire brigade (LFB) said.

Crews from Croydon, Purley, Woodside and Wallington fire stations attended the scene.

The fire was under control by around 8.30pm. The LFB said the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

At around 8pm firefighters were called to a fire at a house converted into flats in Lakedale Road, Plumstead.

A five-roomed flat on the first  floor of the two-storey property was partially damaged by fire. 

One person – suffering from smoke inhalation – was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews before being taken to hospital.

The LFB believe the fire to be accidental and caused by hot oil on a gas hob.

A LFB spokeswoman said: “Fires are more likely to start in the kitchen than any other room in the home.

“Keep all objects, like tea towels, cloths, plastic bowls and anything flammable well away from the cooker and always check the hob is turned off when you’ve finished cooking. If you do have to leave the room, turn off the heat and never leave cooking unattended.

“Attempting to extinguish a fire by yourself can lead to injuries or even be fatal and can increase the risk of more severe damage to your property. Leave the room, close the door, shout a warning to others and call 999.”

At around 9.15pm another fire was reported to the LFB at a residential block of flats on Southend Crescent in Eltham.

A five-roomed flat, on the fifth floor of the seven-storey building, was partially damaged by the fire, which firefighters believed to be accidental and caused by an electrical fault.

The blaze was under control within an hour, at around 10pm. Five fire engines and around 30 firefighters from Sidcup, Bromley, East Greenwich and Greenwich fire stations attended the scene.
