Beckenham man in 50s repeatedly stuck with a hammer as thieves make off with his watch

A Beckenham man in 50s has been stuck with a hammer in the early hours of the morning as thieves ran off with his watch.

The man was left with a broken arm after being ‘struck a number of times’ with a bright-handled hammer.

Police were called at 7:38am last Wednesday, June 9, to reports of an assault at the junction of St. Georges Road and Bromley Road.

It was reported that a 50-year-old man was approached by two males dressed in dark clothing who stole his watch.

They became involved in a struggle and the victim ended up on the floor where he was struck a number of times with the hammer.

He was taken to hospital where he received treatment for a broken arm before being discharged.

The pair ran off towards the High Street and past the Beckenham Methodist Church.

Detective Constable James Quigley, of the South Area Command Unit, said; “We have already conducted a wide range of enquiries, however we are appealing for the public’s help to track down those responsible.

“Did you see anything suspicious in the area at around the time of the incident or the two males running down the High Street? You could have vital information and we would like to speak to you as soon as possible.”

There have been no arrests.

Anyone who can help the investigation is asked to call police 101 or tweet @MetCC quoting CAD 1486/09Jun. To remain anonymous contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
