It’s an often mooted question. Where can you find London’s best roast dinner?”
The truth is that our city is awash with choice when it comes to that most British of weekend dishes.
More important a question might be, “how much are you willing to spend?”
Mid-range roasts served up in the suburbs are now costing between £15 and £20 as standard.
Spiralling costs have seen roasts in central London reach well over £20 but at Borough Market, double that.
At Roast, located in the Floral Hall, above the market, Beef Wellington is on the menu at £39.
Pretty steep but it is served with roast potatoes and an assortment of vegetables so no need for sides.
Is it worth the price tag?
It’s a firm yes from me – thin and lightly crisp pastry encased a generous slab of beef fillet cooked to medium.
We pushed the boat because a friend was in town from Australia, with a foodie wish list included a good roast so this was a special occasion.
However, it is possible to get the Roast experience for less.
There’s a rather good deal on at the moment – two courses for £29 and three courses for £35.
Starters include Cumberland Scotch Egg and Beetroot Cured Loch Duart Salmon and for main course, Old Spot Pork Belly, with Bramley apple sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy.
Puddings cover the classics – rice pudding, sticky toffee pudding and a selection of British cheeses and chutney.
There’s also an option to add on bottomless bubbles.
There is nothing quite like the buzz surrounding this restaurant, with entry through the market and an open kitchen luring diners in with heady aroma.
A waft around Borough Market after lunch completed a lovely afternoon, with the only disappointment the 80-strong queue at Humble Crumble.
If you haven’t heard of it, it’s the dessert lover’s choice making waves in London at the moment, with a constant queue.
