Ty a yellow ribbon

Legendary Brixton musician Ty was recognised with an online show for international emerging artists at Tate Modern last month.

The Mercury-nominated rapper, real name Benedict Chijioke, who spent much of his youth in foster care, died of Covid-19 in May last year, less than a year after releasing his last album, A Work of Heart.

With permission from the Ty estate, a series of intergenerational workshops and masterclasses took place last autumn in Ty’s beloved neighbourhood of Brixton.

The Empire Strikes Back sessions were led by one of TY’s most valued musical collaborators ESKA, who handed down his unique approach to music and life to a group of emerging creatives.

They were schooled in Ty’s methods and his work.
