What’s On: St Michael’s Arts Festival in Stockwell

An art festival that focuses on the ‘high arts’ will take place in Stockwell in October.

St Michael’s Arts Festival will bring a variety of performers from opera, classical music, poetry, art and literature to South London for more than three weeks.

This year’s festival will feature author and journalist Nicholas Coleridge, radio presenter Ed Stourton and world-famous flautist William Bennett.

There will also be jazz, stand-up, poetry, theatre performances and a huge range of activities to introduce children to the performing arts.

Led by creative director Matthew O’Keeffe, founder of Lunchbreak Opera and the Brixton Chamber Orchestra, this a chance to enjoy performances by classical music group Antica Musica Rotherhithe and soprano Camilla Seale, as well as catch Puccini’s little known opera Gianni Schicchi.

SMAF provides a showcase for both budding and established talent to exhibit paintings, ceramics, photography and sculpture in the musical and performance programme – this year’s theme is My London.

There is a great opportunity for children to participate in a wide-range of activities, including film making, arts and crafts and theatre production.

Kids can try their hand at film-making with specialist film-makers Lemon Wedge, grapple with Shakespeare Unwrapped and try their hands at Arts and Crafts with Morley College, one of South London’s art institutions.
