30 people forced to evacuate burning block of flats in middle of night

About 30 people were forced get out of a block of flats that had caught on fire in the middle of the night.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled a fire in Evenwood Close, Putney, in the early hours of this morning.

Half of a flat on the second and third floors of a four-storey block of flats was damaged by fire. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 3.45am.

One man was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation and about 30 people left the building before firefighters arrived.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: The Brigade was called at 3.44am and the fire was extinguished by 6.29am.

“Crews from Wandsworth, Fulham, Battersea and Chelsea fire stations attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
