Court hearing for man who allegedly aided Iran spy Khalife after Wandsworth jail breakout
A man has been charged with assisting Daniel Khalife after he escaped from prison.
Khalife, 23, a former British Army soldier, was accused of illegally accessing personal information about British soldiers, and sharing that information and other classified documents with contacts in Iran.
He was arrested for breaching the Official Secrets Act and placed on remand at HM Prison Wandsworth, from where he escaped on September 6, 2023.
It triggered a nationwide police search. After three days on the run, he was re-captured and in November last year, was found guilty of spying for Iran.
Imran Chowdury, 25, of Chingford, allegedly assisted Khalife after he escaped.
Chowdury was arrested a year ago and was charged in December via postal requisition, with one count of assisting an escaped prisoner, contrary to Section 22(2) of the Criminal Justice Act 1961.
He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
No further action was taken against a 25-year-old woman who was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender in February 2024.
