Library opening its doors for special night-time literary sessions
As sure as night follows day. After World Book Day comes World Book night.
Where the former, more famous event is aimed at young children, Bromley Central library is putting on a programme aimed at teenagers and adults.
The High Street library will be hosting its first ‘World Book Night’ on April 23 – St George’s Day and also Shakespeare’s birthday – offering an exciting array of fun activities around reading, writing and creating – and it’s all free.
World Book Night aims to promote the love of language, literature and imagination. Attractions will include 150 ‘quick reads’ to give away, creative writing workshops with local authors Kerry Barrett and Annie Lyons and a Q and A session with local writers James Swallow and Bex Levene.
There will also be a painting taster session with the Arts Nest Studio and as part of the ‘Bromley 60’ celebrations, librarian Chris Davis will be giving a talk on ‘A History of Bromley in Five Buildings’
The evening will also feature a Start-Up Bromley marketplace, showcasing local entrepreneurs, cocktails and Nigerian food, poetry recitals, Shakespearean monologues and music from students at the BRIT School
Comic book artist Ken Hopgood – creator of Marvel’s ‘Hulk Buster’) – is also booked to attend.
Bromley libraries are run by charitable social enterprise GLL under the ‘Better’ brand.
Sally Adcock, GLL’s Libraries Manager in the borough, said: “We’re very excited to be offering our first World Book Night, continuing our tradition of the library after-dark events. We’ve got some fantastic local authors and illustrators coming along plus inspiring entrepreneurs and cracking performers – who needs sleep?!”
World Book Night starts at 6pm. For full details about bookings, visit Bromley Central Library or call 0203 931 0900. You can also email them at central.library@gll.org.
