Man’s body found in burnt-out Mitcham house two days after it was gutted in a blaze
A body was discovered after a fire tore through a house, leaving it gutted and blackened by the blaze.
The man was found in the building in Beecholme Avenue, Mitcham two days after the inferno enveloped most of its rooms it in the early hours of January 1.
The search had to be delayed because of fears it could collapse, but he was found yesterday, Monday, 3 January.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “At 02:49hrs on Saturday, 1 January, police were called to a fire at a residential address in Beecholme Avenue, Mitcham.
“Officers attended with the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.
“One person was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.”
“Enquiries to identify the person are ongoing,” the Met statement added.
“At this stage the cause of the fire is not thought to be suspicious.”
