Merton activists rally in support of Palestinian cause

Dozens of members and supporters of the Merton Palestine Solidarity Campaign gathered with homemade kites which carried photographs, names and stories of Palestinians who have died in the recent conflict.

The peaceful protest took part outside Wimbledon Quarter on Saturday.

Emilia Reid, vice chair of the group, said:  “This senseless slaughter of innocent Palestinian babies, children, women and men must end.

“Inspired by Palestinian women who held a silent protest in 1929 in Jerusalem, we held our silent protest today because words fail us that this genocide continues.

“We held up pictures of Palestinians [killed in Gaza] to remind people that they are not just numbers, they are not just statistics somewhere far away, they matter, they were someone’s baby, their whole world, they are our children too.”

The number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza war, according to the official figures of the Gaza Health Ministry, are over 50,000 and 17,000 are children.
