New data finds London boroughs hand out the most parking fines in the UK
London boroughs make up nine out of ten councils that issued the most tickets in the UK between January and July this year.
Freedom of Information requests were submitted by Access Self Storage to the 429 local councils across the UK with responses being received from 250 of them.
The City of Westminster topped the list, handing out 114,992 tickets and collecting ÂŁ4.89 million, followed by the City of London Corporation with 100,356 tickets and a fine amount of ÂŁ5.08 million.
Other boroughs in the top 20 included Wandsworth in fourth position, Lambeth ranking at 15th, Hammersmirth and Fulham at 18th and Lewisham, ranked at number 20.
Southwark council has been revealed as the London borough with the highest average ticket costs, ranking 6th on the list with an average ticket cost of ÂŁ73.12.
One London resident, Katy Bloomfield said: “Just trying to find parking in London is a nightmare, let alone then getting a ticket for it.
“I always try and look out for resident permit signs but it can get a bit confusing and I’ve definitely been caught out before.
“Using the car felt like the better choice during lockdown but it’s hard when you don’t know if you can park anywhere without getting a fine.”
The total number of tickets issued by all the councils that responded was 3,094,829, and the total fine amount was ÂŁ112,761,254.95.
Kevin Pratt from Access Self Storage said: “Local councils across the country are making millions from parking fines, particularly in London.
“If you’re in London and need to park your car, make sure you read the signs on the road carefully and try to plan ahead.”
