A primary school in Bromley where pupils read books to nursery children and care home residents has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted in all areas.
Harris Primary Academy Beckenham Green in St George’s Road, was praised in a recent inspection by the education watchdog for its superb quality of education and personal development of students.
The inspector noted the emphasis placed on reading at the school, with children being taught to read as soon as they join reception, with initiatives such as pupils reading at local nurseries and care homes done to ensure a love of reading is instilled.
Max Ellington, principal of Harris Primary Academy Beckenham Green, said: “We work with both Bellissima Nursery and Ladybird Nursery, which allows us to empower our children to go over to see pre-schoolers and actually share their love of reading with younger children.
“Older children are also visiting the local care home, Sloane House, so they can go and share stories with the residents.
“That is really important because it builds a rapport between members of our community at different ages. It also teaches the children empathy and an understanding of people of different ages so they can both relate to each other through a love of reading.”
The report also claimed pupils at the school were “incredibly” well-mannered and showed exceptional behaviour. Mr Ellington said the primary school had a robust and well-thought-out personal development curriculum, designed to ensure children become well-rounded citizens.
