Son jailed for killing father in knife attack
A son has been jailed for killing his 52-year-old father in a frenzied attack that saw him stabbed 33 times.
Sean Maurice, 31, of Widmore Road, Bromley, was yesterday jailed for 10 years at the Old Bailey for the manslaughter of his father, Paul Maurice.
The 31-year-old admitted manslaughter at the Old Bailey but was acquitted of murder.
The court heard Maurice had told officers: “I’ve got nothing to lose. You lot are trying to arrest me because I beat up my dad who abused me, he raped me… and you want to arrest me?”
On the evening of September 14, 2021, at around 10.45pm a neighbour of Paul Maurice answered their front door after Paul rang the doorbell multiple times.
Paul was found bare-chested and covered in blood due to multiple stab wounds and said he had been attacked by his son with a knife.
The neighbour called emergency services, who gave Paul first aid, and when he was asked who had attacked him, he replied “Sean”.
He was treated at the scene before paramedics took him into an ambulance, but his condition quickly deteriorated and he was taken back out into the road where they performed emergency surgery.
Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead just before midnight.
At around 3.20am Sean Maurice was spotted in Burnt Ash Lane and chased by officers on foot. He climbed on to a shed and there was a brief standoff with officers.
On coming down, he was informed that he was under arrest on suspicion of murder, to which he appeared shocked and was taken into custody.
A post-mortem gave Paul’s cause of death as stab injuries to the chest and abdomen. He was found to have sustained 33 separate sharp force injuries in the attack.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Wood, senior investigating officer at the Met, said: “Our thoughts today are with the family, who have been devastated by the events of that night.
“We know that Sean’s relationship with his father was a difficult one and had been for many years, however the level of violence used here was shocking and can never be justified.
“I am grateful to my team of officers, who have worked so diligently in what was a very complex investigation.”
