AFC Wimbledon boss Jackson gives his verdict on EFL Cup tie win at Bromley
Johnnie Jackson was delighted to see his AFC Wimbledon team progress to the second round of the EFL Cup with victory at Bromley on Tuesday night.
The Dons came from behind for the second successive game to secure their place in round two of the competition thanks to goals from Josh Kelly and Joe Pigott.
“We are through in the cup – that’s what we set out to do, I’m really pleased,” said Jackson.
“We started the game really well, completely dominant with the football, moving the ball well, creating openings, we looked a really good side.
“Then we go behind to their first attack. That was disappointing, that element of it, that we didn’t have anything to show for the good start. But we continued to do our stuff, get ourselves back in the game and we scored a really good goal. Then more of the same in the second half, a more even game. Both teams had chances, but we took ours, another really well-worked goal and then saw it through.”
Kelly and Pigott both netting means that Jackson now has four of his strikers with goals to their names after just two games.
“That’s really pleasing,” he said. “You want to win and you don’t mind how you do it, but you want your frontmen to get off the mark.
“So for all four of them to get off the mark is great. We need all of them to chip in, share the workload and the burden we put on the front two.
“If we want to do anything this season we will need them all.
The Dons boss was full of praise for Kelly’s strike which levelled the scores after Bromley had moved in front against the run of play.
Jackson said: “It was a really good goal. A well-worked, great ball by Myles Hippolyte and Josh on the top line, on the defender’s shoulder, took it really well.
“It’s brilliant for him to get off the mark.”
The two sides meet again on Saturday in League Two.
Jackson said: “It will be a different game.
“I’m sure there will be a few changes from them.
“We won’t think that we have nailed anything with tonight’s result – because Saturday is a new test.
“Their fans will be right up for it, their first home league game. We will do the work and pay them the respect they deserve because they are a good team but we will come here and try and get a good result.”
