Charlton Athletic boss explains how Exeter match affects Lincoln City game debrief
Ben Garner has revealed that the standard debrief for his players after the 0-0 draw at Lincoln City will not take place because of their Tuesday night assignment against Exeter City.
The Addicks are 18th in the League One table after a seventh draw in 12 matches.
Next up for Charlton is a home game against Exeter City, who recently saw manager Matt Taylor – a former Addicks centre-back – quit for Rotherham United.
On-loan Fulham striker Jay Stansfield scored twice for the Grecians as they won 2-0 at Barnsley at the weekend.
Asked about replaying the Lincoln match, Garner told the South London Press: “On a normal week, if we haven’t got a midweek, I wouldn’t watch it back until the Monday. But with the quick turnaround and having the journey back from Lincoln, I tried to use that time effectively.
“I watched some of the game back on the coach on Saturday evening and then I watched the rest of it yesterday.
“With a quick turnaround I don’t debrief that as a meeting with the players, we just send individual clips and comments to the players. We might pull one or two today to go through a few things but with the quick turnaround our focus is very much on Exeter.
“On a normal week if we went Saturday to Saturday we would have more of a debrief of the game and go through things as a collective.
“This time it is about what individuals need to know to basically help them on Tuesday night.
“Defensively we were very good and had good control of the game. One thing we can improve on Tuesday is a little bit quicker through the pitch, at times. We could’ve run behind a little more and been a little braver with passes. Other than that it was a pretty good performance and a positive clean sheet away from home.
“It’s one of those games we probably deserved to win 1-0 and you come away and it’s a great three points.
“When I watched it back it’s probably just as frustrating to see the decisions again – there are two penalties in there that aren’t given. But we need to make sure we are taking care of business ourselves and not relying on decisions like that.”

Delusional guff, it wasn’t a good performance away at Lincoln, it was a terrible uncoordinated shambles against truly dreadful opposition. Exeter can look forward to a a simple win on Tuesday.
