Charlton Athletic to make fresh improved contract offer to Celtic target Alfie Doughty

Alfie Doughty is set to be offered an improved contract – as Charlton Athletic try again to extend the winger’s stay.

The 20-year-old was the subject of numerous bids by Celtic before the last transfer window shut. Luton Town also had a low offer knocked back.

Doughty is due to be a free agent at the end of June but the Addicks would be due compensation as he is under the age of 24, although that drops significantly if he moves outside of England.

The academy product is set to be out for four months with a torn hamstring.

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer said: “We’ve just got to see where we’re at with Alfie and his agent but we’re hopeful that we can get something done there.

“Like I’ve said before, this is the right place for him to be at the moment – especially with his injury as well now.

“He needs to focus on just getting back and having that security behind him, I think. Hopefully we can get that one done.”

  • Would love Alfie to sign a new contract but my only concern is that he clearly has a serious hamstring injury and this could be a problem for him in the future. Alfie has great pace, which is one of his best assets. If this injury does not heal properly, it could re occur again and again. Look what happened to Michael Owen some years ago. He lost a yard of pace and was never quite the same player. I hope this will not be the case with Alfie.
