Charlton Athletic top-scorer Matty Godden: I should’ve had hat-trick against Wigan Athletic
Matty Godden has admitted he was disappointed not to be walking away with the matchball in Charlton’s 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
The experienced striker is on 15 goals for the campaign after bagging a brace against the Latics.
Godden finished smartly on his left foot after Kayne Ramsay’s cross early in the contest was not cleared properly.
And he was in the right place to tap home from very close range after Macaulay Gillesphey headed down Luke Berry’s free-kick to the back post.
Charlton had a huge chance to make it 3-0 almost instantly after the second half started but Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle produced a double stop from Tyreece Campbell and then Godden on the follow up.
“I should’ve scored a hat-trick,” said Godden, signed from Coventry City in the summer. “Tyreece went through and the keeper parried it. It was a great save to be fair. If I had the moment again I’d probably take a touch and go around him.
“It was important to get the early goal to justify our dominance at the time and we kicked on. Up until the final five minutes we were really, really dominant. We felt confident going into the game. It was important we started the game well and we did that – they couldn’t get out.”
Godden leads Charlton’s scoring charts and the 33-year-old is joint seventh in the League One charts with 12.
“Like I’ve said in interviews in the past I don’t set targets,” he said. “I just go out to score in every game if I can put myself in positions.
“Targets add pressure and I don’t want to start snatching at things. I’ve never lost confidence in my ability in front of goal but targets can bring on pressure and I’m not that sort of player.”
Charlton’s second goal was another one to chalk up for set-piece coach James Brayne.
“The gaffer is really keen on set-pieces – we have got a lot of size in our side,” said Godden. “I’m not trying to get involved in the first bit – I’m trying to sniff out goals from the second phase.
“As soon as I saw Macca above his man I knew exactly where the ball was going and I had a simple two-yard tap in.”
