Dons head coach Mark Robinson: ‘Defeat by League Two Scunthorpe in friendly is a wake-up call’

Mark Robinson described AFC Wimbledon’s defeat against Scunthorpe United as a “wake up call”.

The game against the Irons was the Dons’ last pre-season game before the League One campaign gets underway next Saturday against Doncaster Rovers – and their first in front of their home fans after their return to their spiritual home in Plough Lane.

Speaking to AFC Wimbledon’s club website, Robinson said: “If we are going to have the season we believe we can have, we have to get the fundamentals right.

“We were well in control early on in the game, then by being sloppy and being too comfortable, we gave them some belief. Then we had a really poor 15 minutes, where people weren’t doing their jobs.

“There were some good moments in the second-half going forward, but then fundamentally you have to get people into those key areas.

“Most of the goals scored are in the penalty area, so if you’re not getting into that area, then you won’t score goals.

“It was great to see the fans, but I just wish we would’ve given them more to be pleased about. There were some moments that were quite exciting.

“We need to make sure as a collective that we’re really strong and we can’t give away cheap goals like we did today and like we’ve done throughout pre-season.

“It’s a bit of a wake-up call.”
