Johnnie Jackson delighted AFC Wimbledon squad shared goalscoring burden in Notts County win

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson was pleased to see his side sharing the goals around as they defeated League Two promotion rivals Notts County 2-0 at Plough Lane yesterday.

Defender Joe Lewis opened the scoring when he guided his header in off the far post from a corner just after the half-hour mark, before midfielder Alistair Smith fired home from the edge of the box 15 minutes later to double their lead.

The Dons’ scoring record has been poor of late, with just one goal in their last four games going into the fixture, due in part to a reliance on League Two Golden Boot contender Matty Stevens for goals.

Jackson had stressed out the importance of other players chipping in ahead of the Notts game, with Lewis and Smith stepping up to score just their first and third goals of the season respectively.

“I am very pleased with Joe Lewis’ goal,” said Jackson. “We have been crying out for a centre-half to score from a set-piece, I am delighted for Joe that he has done that.

“He is a defender, that is what we look to and he was rock solid in the middle of the back three as well.

“Smith has scored another great goal, a different type of goal, that we want from our midfielders.”

Wimbledon could have had more in the game, with the best chance of the second half coming when an inch perfect cross found Callum Maycock right in front of goal, but the midfielder could only head the ball over the bar.

“There were other moments too,” said Jackson. “Callum Maycock at the end, that would have been a great midfielder’s goal as well, so it cannot always be the forwards scoring.

“I have said this time and time again, we have got to spread the goals around, but having not scored in the last couple of games, I would have taken the goals from anywhere today.”
