Millwall manager Rowett discusses impressive Championship away form

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Gary Rowett is delighted with Millwall’s away results since he took charge – but wants to add a little more sparkle to their attacking play.

The Lions are yet to concede in the Championship this season and Jed Wallace’s decider at Rotherham on Saturday made it eight wins in 17 fixtures on the road since Rowett succeeded Neil Harris at the SE16 outfit.

“What we need to do is not be quite so reliant on winning 1-0 and keeping a clean sheet,” said the Millwall manager, pictured right. “But at the same time our defensive record and stability was a big factor in us winning games last season.

“Most teams that get out of this league or are successful in it have the best defensive records. We want to play a little better and be a little more creative, but I’m certainly not going to be disappointed at a clean sheet.

“We’ve always had quite good away records as my other clubs because we pride ourselves on being really hard to play against and also limit the space.

“In particular the side I’ve got here thrives on disrupting the opposition. I don’t think we’ll ever be a team who goes out and will absolutely technically play opposition off the park. That’s not the kind of team we’ve got. But it doesn’t mean we don’t want to get better at that.

“They’ve played the system [three at the back] really well – particularly away because teams are more on the front foot.

“Where we’ve found it a challenge is breaking sides down at home, because they tend to be more respectful.”
