‘Not good enough’ – Addicks boss Holden critical of set-piece defending as forced to settle for Valley point

Charlton Athletic manager Dean Holden is demanding improvements in the way they defend set-pieces after their 1-1 draw against Wycombe Wanderers.

Miles Leaburn’s 10th goal of the season gave the Addicks the lead in the 16th minute.

But Wycombe centre-back Chris Forino equalised in the closing stages, leaping to plan a free header beyond Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Holden said: “I’m a bit disappointed, because we were the better team. The first period of the game was a little bit scrappy. We expected them to be direct and we had to get to grips with that second ball game.

“From 10 minutes onwards we got into our flow and rhythm. We passed the ball really well, with purpose. We got around their shape and the goal is a really good example of that. We worked it one side and managed to get a two-v-one with a switch of play, Albie (Morgan) smashes it across goal and Miles is exactly where you want him to be. That’s not just luck – he’s in the right place, where he needs to be.

“Double figures for Miles is excellent from a personal perspective. He needs to reset his objectives for the rest of the season.

“We’ve created chances after that and they’ve had a couple as well – we have to accept that. But I’m disappointed we didn’t go in at 2-0. There is nothing in the game before they score.

“To concede from a set-piece…we have to improve. We’ve conceded too many goals from set-pieces – it’s a fact. We need to improve it.

“Every goal we’ve conceded there are different bits of detail in there. We have changed the structure around. He gets above his marker for a free header and sticks it in the back of the net. On that one occasion the defending is not good enough.”
