Patrick Vieira assesses Conor Gallagher’s Crystal Palace spell as midfielder prepares to head back to Chelsea

Patrick Vieira has described Conor Gallagher’s season-long loan as a “win-win” for both the midfielder, Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

The loanee, who is set to return to Stamford Bridge and battle for his place in Thomas Tuchel’s side, made 38 appearances under Vieira.

Gallagher’s high pressing and goalscoring attributes have been key to Vieira’s style of play during his time at Selhurst Park.

The 23-year-old has broken into the England team thanks to his performances for Palace and made his Three Lions debut in the 10-0 win against San Marino.

Gallagher has grabbed eight goals and recorded five assists in all competitions as a Palace player.

“Conor has been fantastic to us,” explained Vieira of Gallagher’s season.

“He felt like he is at home the way he has been performing for us. He understands the way that we want to play the game, and he brings his energy and his determination.

“Hopefully, he will finish with a win.”

When asked whether he hoped that this Sunday’s final day clash against Manchester United was not Gallagher’s last game for the Eagles, Vieira said: “We know that he has to go back to Chelsea. Then, what will happen? We don’t know.

“But what is important is that he came for a year, and he worked hard and worked well, and he gave something to the team and the football club – it was a win-win.

“He was really happy with us – he played really well, which allowed him to go to England. He’s happy, so we are happy.”
