Performance against Morecambe was a ‘step in the right direction’ for AFC Wimbledon head coach

Mark Robinson felt that AFC Wimbledon took a step in the right direction with their performance despite dropping two points in their 0-0 draw with Morecambe today.

The Dons had 15 shots, three of them on target, during the 90 minutes but could not find a way past Trevor Carson in the Morecambe goal.

They went close when Ollie Palmer forced an acrobatic save from Carson midway through the second half. Ayoub Assal also hit the woodwork during the second 45 minutes.

Robinson’s side ended a run of three straight defeats but are just two points away from the bottom four.

“It was miles better,” said Robinson on the performance.

“Obviously it’s two points dropped. But because of how we have been before the Milton Keynes game, we feel good because we felt our energy levels were there. We looked like us, and that 30-minute spell in the second half was quite relentless – they barely came out of their half.

“Just [missing] a little bit of decision making really in the final third – possibly a little bit of quality.

“If we go one-up in that spell then they have got to come at us. With the mood that we were in, we could have opened them up even more.”

The Dons have failed to find the net in their previous four games, but they created more chances against Morecambe and were on the front foot for the entire encounter.

“The pleasing thing was that we came out in the second half, and that was us at our best,” said Robinson. “If you score a couple of goals, everybody goes away saying: ‘Wow, what a great performance.’

“You mustn’t let the fact that we haven’t scored mask what was, on the whole, a really positive performance and a step in the right direction.”
