‘The lads can call me whatever they want’ – Matty Godden reveals teammates have given him nickname synonymous with former Charlton forward
Charlton Athletic striker Matty Godden’s teammates have given him a nickname that is synonymous with an Addicks forward from years gone by.
The frontman opened the scoring at during the 2-2 draw at Bloomfield Road yesterday with a close-range tap in, almost a carbon copy of the goal he scored against Bristol Rovers at The Valley in midweek.
The former Coventry City man is up to 11 for the campaign now. He admitted that he enjoys showing off his striker’s instinct to score and it’s earned him a moniker that is written into Addicks folklore.
“That’s the sort of goals that I score,” said Godden.
“The lads have given me nicknames in the dressing room of ‘Killer’ and ‘the Sniffer Dog.’ That’s just how I’ve made a living and they’re the goals that I love. I’ve heard of that, someone told me that Derek Hales [was known as Killer]. The lads can call me whatever they want.
“You can score the type of goal that I scored at Rotherham, albeit in a defeat, but it’s [the close-range] goals that I really love. You can see by my celebration, I just love scoring them, waiting for someone to have a shot that’s dragging my way to poke it in, that’s my sort of goal and I’ve done that for a few years now.”
