The lowdown on new Millwall signing George Honeyman – Hull wanted to keep a stellar performer from title-winning side

George Honeyman has joined Millwall for an undisclosed fee from Hull City.

The 27-year-old midfielder is the Lions’ second signing of the summer transfer window.

So what do we know about Honeyman?

THE TIGERS WANTED TO KEEP HIM

Honeyman was one of eight players at Hull City whose contracts expired, but the Championship club took up the option of a further 12 months.

Hull vice-chairman Tan Kesler revealed they were in talks over an extended deal for the former Sunderland captain. He said: “If George is happy with us we will do everything to make him stay. I’ve had warm conversations with him, as a character, he’s the type of guy I want to see in my team.

“I’ve told him where we are and I think we’ve offered him a very fair contract. Everybody expects different, of course, that’s part of the negotiations. That’s my job and it’s my job to get everybody’s expectations on a realistic level.”

HE HAD A VERY GOOD 2020-21 SEASON

Hull City won the League One title in that campaign and Honeyman swept the board with the Player of the Year awards, being voted number one by both his fellow team-mates and supporters. Then Tigers manager Grant McCann also named Honeyman as his standout player for that season.

Honeyman scored four goals and got 14 assists in the 2021-21 season, starting all 42 League One matches he was available for.
In total he scored 10 goals, with 23 assists, in 126 matches for Hull.

WHICH CLUB WAS HE AT BEFORE THAT?

Sunderland, who he joined at the age of 10. Gus Poyet handed him his debut in 2015 as a late sub in an FA Cup tie at Bradford. He made six Premier League appearances for the Black Cats and was then a first-team regular as they lost their Championship status in the 2017-18 season. At the start of the following campaign he was name club captain by boss Jack Ross – the first to come through the youth set-up and take the armband since Michael Gray.
