St Mungo’s £50m redevelopment could see two tower blocks built next to each other

Two tower blocks with 100 flats and a homeless shelter could be built in Central London.

More than £50 million could be spent redeveloping the St Mungo’s premises in Harrow Road and building a 20-storey tower with flats for rent, along with a nine-storey homeless centre for the charity next door. 

The new homeless centre would be twice as big as the building currently in operation.

The charity hopes to house rough sleepers for a month at a time in one development. The building will also have a meeting lounge, training space and counselling space.

If St Mungo’s is given the green light by Westminster City council it will be able to provide space for 45 homeless people each month.

A Westminster council officer wrote: “Homelessness is a growing problem nationally, but is particularly acute in Westminster, which, according to the applicant, has the highest number of rough sleepers in the country.

“The existing building and facility has come to the end of its natural life. St Mungo’s, as charity leaders in the supporting and aiding of the homeless community, want to significantly improve the facility at Harrow Road and the services which is offers.”

Council documents show the 20-storey tower block would be built next door and it could provide 98 much-needed homes in Central London which would be rented out to tenants.

The buildings will need to get permission from Westminster City council’s major planning committee on September 20.
