Bromley sports club given booze licence despite neighbours’ noise objections

A sports club has been given permission to serve booze in its clubhouse.

Bromley council has granted a licence to allow LA Sports Club in Beckenham to serve booze in its clubhouse, which is planned to be renovated.

The plans for the bar were sent by Langley Annexe, a group of four families running a children’s football club in the area.

The application was discussed at a licensing meeting for Bromley council last night and has received 56 objections online, including from some who were concerned about alcohol around children.

One resident said in council documents: “This is meant to be a sports venue for young people, not an establishment for consuming alcohol.”

Three Langley Park schools are located a five-minute walk away from the sports club.

Peter Mayhew, speaking on behalf of Langley Annexe, said: “We have very strong child protection policies in place.

“This is a football club which is run predominantly for young people. They have very strong protection measures in place as you would expect for such a club and those will be carried forward through, things like Challenge 21, refusals registers and so forth.”

Mr Mayhew said the applicant never intended to have the bar open every day, and that the clubhouse would be used largely as an events space for the local community.

At the end of the meeting, the licensing committee gave permission for Langley Annexe to serve booze at LA Sports Club from 11am to 6.30pm every day, instead of the original 11.00am to 11.00pm licence that was applied for.
