Nathan Jones on Charlton transfer link to Asmir Begovic and absence of triallists

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has refused to discuss their interest in former Stoke, Chelsea, Bournemouth and QPR goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

The Addicks held talks this week with the 37-year-old stopper, who is a free agent after leaving the R’s this summer.

Jones said: “Look, we want to bring in another goalkeeper. We know what we want to do and it is wrong me speaking about anyone until any deal is imminent or we have done anything.

“We’re very happy with Will (Mannion), he was excellent today (in a 2-0 friendly loss to Wimbledon) in how he played. He couldn’t really do anything with the goals.

“We’ll look and I’m sure over the next week we will have something for you.”

Our website reported that Burton Albion are set to sign Charlton keeper Harry Isted.

Jones said: “Again, until something is done (he won’t comment). We can’t carry four, for a start. We’re looking to bring one in. We can’t carry four. Whether it is imminent or whatever happens over the next day or two, is something we can’t confirm yet.

“What we can’t do is carry four and we are looking to bring another one in.”

Triallists Dan Potts and Teddy Bishop were both absent from today’s friendly against the Dons.

“Potts is still training with us,” said Jones. “He’s had a tough week, big week, so we didn’t feel we needed to push him again today.

“Teddy is not training with us at the minute but he has done well in pre-season for us but at the minute we have got too big a squad to bring others in. We have to trim that down and once we trim that down then we know exactly what we need.”
