The Urban Project Centre fly the flag for culture in Lewisham

A community opera project is set to champion Lewisham as a cultural and educational centre.

The Urban Opera Project is an initiative designed by ACE-funded arts charity Music and Theatre for All (MTFA).

As well as flying the flag for culture in Lewisham, MTFA hopes the project will have a positive impact on people’s mental and physical well-being by bringing the community together.

MTFA founder Thomas Guthrie from Ladywell said: “We are thrilled to launch our urban operas in Lewisham to coincide with the 2022 year of culture.

“The project is designed to give vulnerable communities a voice, develop skills and reduce isolation, and build a spectacular show that the entire community can be proud of.”

Songwriter and jazz musician Gwyneth Herbert will be the project’s composer and lead a team of professional creatives in working with the community to compose the music and script, design sets, perform, manage and advertise every element of the opera.

Thomas Guthrie will direct the opera with Lewisham-based designers Ruth Paton and Rhys Jarman, TV movement director and choreographer Sarah Dowling and Lewisham’s own singing animateur Clare Caddick also getting involved.
