Just in time for the heatwave – school welcomes shade

It may not seem much, but when the thermometer climbs towards 40C, an extra bit of shade comes into its own.

Crook Log Primary School, Crook Log, Bexleyheath, were the winners of a Maxima StarSail fabric canopy after entering a competition run by canopy manufacturers A&S Landscape.

The contest was open to schools in the UK and the prize – now set up in the playground – is worth £15,000.

Almost 19,000 people voted in the competition, supporting their schools, with Crook Log securing first place after collecting more than 2,300 votes.

Headteacher, Pat Barratt, entered her school in the competition and said as part of her plea for the prize: “At Crook Log, we are truly blessed with our grounds, large playgrounds and a very large field, but not enough in the way of trees for shade.

“This means that when the weather is beautiful, the children huddle under three trees to eat their packed lunches.

“It would be wonderful to have more shade to make the experience even better. We have been trying to raise money for shades for the past four years but sadly other expenses keep coming along.”

It seems those pleas have been answered.
