Millwall FC raises record-breaking £20,000 for the Royal British Legion
Millwall Football Club has beaten their own record by raising almost £20,000 for charity during the period of Remembrance.
The club raised funds for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal during their match against Derby County on November 6.
On the day of the fixture, £11,117 was raised through poppy and badge sales.
The football club collected a further £8,201 from sales from Remembrance Day merchandise, which included badges, keyrings and lanyards.
In addition to the £19,319 raised from these, the club is auctioning off shirts worn by the team during their Remembrance Day matches.
The 17 shirts are being sold online, with the auction ending on November 28. They have currently raised £5,563.
Millwall FC held a remembrance fixture before the match on November 6.
Corporal Jake Pugsley of The Rifles and wreath carriers Gunner Conor Joe Parker of the 47th Regiment Royal Artillery and Chief Petty Officer Tim ‘Bomber’ Mills of HMS Excellent led the teams out before placing wreaths in the centre circle.
Both captains also carried wreaths.
Two further wreaths were laid behind the goal at the Cold Blow Lane end before kick-off.
These were laid by Chief Petty Officer Martin ‘Eddie’ Edwards, on behalf of Submariners, and Danny O’Callaghan, in memory of his brother, Private Lee O’Callaghan, the Millwall fan from Bermondsey killed in Iraq in August 2004.
