Nathan Jones after Charlton surrender two-goal lead in Blackpool draw: We’ve thrown victory away

Charlton boss Nathan Jones felt his side threw two points away as they surrendered a two-goal lead during the 2-2 draw at Blackpool.

The hosts struck the leveller two minutes from time –the Addicks seemingly cruising to a comfortable victory just 15 minutes earlier.

Blackpool edged the half-chances in the first-period but were hit by a quick-fire double shortly after the break.

Matty Godden opened the scoring, converting from six yards out as he latched onto Greg Docherty’s strike – a carbon copy of the goal he scored in midweek against Bristol Rovers.

And the lead was doubled two minutes later as Tyreece Campbell’s cross deflected in off Olly Casey for an own-goal.

Substitute Samuel Silvera halved the deficit 15 minutes from time. And Stoke City loanee Niall Ennis brought the hosts level inside the final two minutes, converting the rebound after Jake Beesley rattled the crossbar as he took advantage of Macauley Gillesphey’s horribly sliced clearance.

Both sides still had time to create moments where they could have won it, but the Addicks were forced to settle for a point that leaves them outside the top six on goal difference.

Jones’ side have lost just once in the last 11 League One outings.

The Charlton manager said: “Really frustrating because we were really good. These are a really dangerous side on the counter-attack and you could see what they did. They sit back in, waited for any kind of error and then just explode into the counter-attack. We handled it really well.

“We had one or two hairy moments first half, but I felt we had a bit more quality. Tweaked a few things at half-time and then we were outstanding. Outstanding. So much in the second half and cruised into a 2-0 lead. Could have been more chances with situations.

“Then just a couple of moments of madness because we’ve allowed them to come inside the pitch, switch play, come back inside the pitch and switch play. And it’s stuff we work on and that’s what really frustrates me. It’s not just the second goal and the error, but the manner of the first goal.

“It’s stuff we preach, stuff we do well, stuff we really just hammer home and that’s the frustrating thing. This would have been a magnificent win, really would have. Any win here is. It’s a real difficult place to come.

“They don’t lose many here. They’re a really dangerous side, but I thought we were excellent. I just felt we’ve thrown two points away today.

“We didn’t have any problem really. It was more to do with just errors in terms of what we did.

“We still went for the third, could have had the third. Thierry [Small] was magnificent today and got in and just a little bit more composure and we would have won that game. But the second goal is a big, big error and it’s not like Macca. Macca has been outstanding, but you can’t do that.

“Just clear your lines and we win the game. But just the manner of the first goal from a structural point of view is really disappointing because we’ve let someone inside the pitch once, they’ve switched it, inside the pitch again and it’s stuff that we don’t do and that’s the disappointing thing.

“We’ve actually gone up a place. We’ve extended the unbeaten run. We’re still looking a really good side.

“We could have scored more and probably should have won. We’ve more possession, more chances, more shots on goal. Their keeper’s made more saves.

“So statistically, we’ve been good. On the eye, we’ve been good. I’m really disappointed to throw away a two-goal lead because that doesn’t normally happen to us.”
