Council approves blocks of 75 flats next to Bromley North railway station

Plans for a new pair of six-storey blocks of flats beside a railway station have been approved by the local council.

The plans, for 75 flats in Tweedy Road, were developed by the authority and will involve knocking down the existing garage on the site and building on the car park that is currently there.

The project will also include 38 “affordable” flats, half of which will be priced at social rent and the rest being London Living Rent.

The development was discussed at a meeting of the development control committee on Thursday.

Conservative councillor Simon Fawthrop criticised the parking plan of the project, calling the three spaces being offered a “fairy-tale figure”.

The new homes would see the 82 spaces in the existing car park being built upon.

Conservative councillor Charles Joel said at the meeting: “Some of these people may still have jobs. They may have commercial vehicles, they may have other vehicles and it’s going to cause a problem in the surrounding roads.”

Payal Ceurvels, speaking on behalf of Mae Architects, said the scheme was designed to be friendly to pedestrians and cyclists.

Alicia Munday, head of regeneration at Bromley council, said at the meeting: “This is about various competing priorities. We have a massive pressure on housing at the moment.

“What I would say is that we are working really closely with our housing team, and we will be doing it on another site shortly, whereby we are ensuring that the people that are offered those houses know in advance the circumstances, restraints and constraints to help manage that for other local residents.”

Ms Munday said work on the project would begin in March next year. She said work would escalate in May and construction of the homes is planned to last 18 months.
